Abejas vs. Brazil 3-1

Coming into this game we had played a few friendly games with a women's team which we won. These games were good for us as far as preparation for this game, although I noticed during these my girls were playing a very physical game. This isn't our style of play, we are more of a touch the ball team. By this I mean that we look for seams, open players, and pick our shots so I was kind of concerned coming into this game that we were going to play physically rather than possesion time. Come game time I saw something in this team that I don't recall seeing in a long time. I saw a gleam in their eye, they really wanted this game. This is a coach's dream, when you players come out with this kind of mindset. There had been a lot of talk between these two teams and now the talking was over. It's game time! The Abejas and the Brazilians have made bets against each other as to who was the better team. All of the following players contributed: Erica, Marlene, Crystal, Lucero, Andrea, Nelli, Leslie, and Jaden. This was a total team effort from beginning to end. The referee blew his whistle to start the game and immediately the Abejas took control of this game, making their statement. We came out and scored 3 points in the first half and the Brazilians weren't able to do anything. Erica scored the first goal with an assist from Marlene. Crystal scored the second off a pass from Marlene and not to be outdone Marlene took it upon herself to score the third goal. Marlene physical presense in the midfield along with Crystal and Erica's threats from the outsides made it very difficult for the Brazilians since they didn't know which way these girls were coming from. Lucero at defense along with Nelli made it impossible for the Brazilians to penetrate leading to a shut out in the first half. The beginning of the second half was the beginning of my worries for we changed our mindset from being a finesse team to a physical team. The second half was just about who was the toughest team. A lot of pushing and shoving. The Abejas showed their toughness and I as a coach know how tough this team is since I've been with them quite a while. The Abejas like playing physical games but I feel that this team plays better when using skill and touching the ball. We gave up one goal towards the end of the game and made some eyepopping goal saves which got the crowd going. At one point the Brazilians had the ball inside the goalie box but somehow Jaden got a leg on it and Andrea had her hands on it but it was still loose. Lucero came out of nowhere and cleared it down the court ending that threat. That finished out that game for us. The Abejas were very pleased as a team and as a coach, it's always a pleasure to see that in your team. I'm proud of all my players in this team effort.

We're Back!

Abejas vs. Chivas 1-8

After a long layoff we came in to face the Chivas. We had a lot of rust since we haven't played in almost 3 weeks. We've been indoors practicing and playing the U-12 girls so we played okay. I feel that this is a very strong division but I know the Abejas U-14 girls will come out and give it everything they have. I'm not so sure they really care if they win or lose against the boys. I think what matters to them is that they want to come out and have fun playing a game that they enjoy. I think the Abejas are focused on an upcoming game against the other girls U-14 team. My understanding of the Brazilians is that they feel they can beat the Abejas. This leads me believe that we didn't overlook this game but are more focused on the upcoming game. The Abejas have a couple of winable games coming up. Regardless of the win-loss column we will be in the playoffs at the end of the season. I look forward to a big upset come the end of the season which is going to anger some people. I say this because of our past experience in playoffs. Our history is that we usually knock someone off.

Abejas vs. Aztecas 5-5

We had total control throughout the whole game. Again we were missing key players. In order for us to be successful, WE NEED ALL OUR PLAYERS. I consider this game a victory for us as we showed that we were capable of beating some of these teams. The Abejas had this game 4-1 at halftime. In the second half of the game with about 8 minutes left, we broke down. As a coach, I made some adjustments that I probably shouldn't have. I cost my team some very important points. I have complete confidence in my players. When I put my players in difficult spots, I'm hoping and I'm confident that they will fill those spots. In the second half of the game I put Scarlett at defense and Paulita at forward. Scarlett did well at defense but we weren't able to put up any points. The Aztecas came back and put up four goals on us and took the lead 5-4. They held that lead until 20 seconds left in the game when the Abejas struck the equalizing goal to tie the score and that's how the game ended. This game was a crowd pleaser and as a coach it's always rewarding to hear the crowd reaction when your team performs well. The Abejas were complimented on their play. A very entertaining game. Should we continue to play like this we will come out in good shape. Our next game is also winable for us.

Abejas vs. Las Moscas 2-11

We played hard in this game, but as in all of our games to date, we were lacking players. This is currently the number two team in the league and without a complete team it is very difficult to beat them. We were never in this game. Again, Scarlett scored all our goals. She needs full support and once again it was not there. Cynthia's goalkeeping is getting better as time goes, and when she gets used to using her hands more it will continue to improve. Once this happens, we can cut down on the amount of goals scored. The top two teams are putting up big numbers of goals on us. We will be facing these teams again and hope to improve against them. We have 4 games remaining and I am optimistic that we will be able to win at least two which I hope will put us in a good playoff position.

Abejas vs. Chivas 4-8

This game was real close at halftime. Overall this game was a lot closer than the score reflected. We even held the lead at one point. Chivas came on strong in the second half and pulled away and we were not able to recover. As usual, Scarlett scored all the points. So far this season, Scarlett has scored most of our goals. Coming into our fourth game the Abejas have our work cut out for us as our record is 1-3. We have a tough game coming up as we will be facing the number 2 team next week. Scarlett will be needing more help from her teammates in the coming games as far as taking shots and assisting. I feel that if we can help her out up front with scoring we can improve and will have better chances in future games. We need everyone to show up consistently. When players only show up here and there we have trouble getting in sync. We are halfway through the season and if we can get a whole team effort we should be able to make a playoff bid.

COACH

Coach is probably one of the most nicest coach a team could have, but at some point and time I know he gets on every ones nerves. He especially gets on mine. He makes me so mad that sometimes I want to yell back at him but its not my fault. He likes it when we get mad at him for some weird reason. But over all he is a cool coach. abejas u-14 girls soccer club

Dec. 9 2007
Abejas vs Brazil
The Abejas won this game 5 to 4. Though score was close the Abejas
should have won this game 5 to 4 but due to the fact that the girls were nervous,
first game in the season and all, but once we got going we played fairly well. Our practice sessions showed me that we were ready for our season opener.
The Abejas U-14 girls club is as follows: Erika Ramos, Nelli Arreola, Jaden
Butcher, Andrea Estrada, Leslie Martinez, Evelyn Martinez, Crystal Lopez, Vannessa Franco, and Marlene Valverde.
Abejas came out and took control of this game Marlene aka Ruby, our team captain,
took control of her team and as a result we took control of the game. The Abejas never trailed in this game. Ruby scored 3 goals and Erika Ramos scored 2 goals. We had a strong defense. Holding our defense down was Leslie Martinez. We gave up four goals, but of these four goals 3 of them were the result of a team break down. So we have some work to do as whole team on the defensive end. A majority of the girls were scared of the team and I had to address this repeatedly for we had played this team on several occasions in the past and I felt that this game should have been a blow out on our side, but because we played scared the game turned out to be close. At one point we had this team down 3 to 1 at half time, but the second half they rallied to get it to 1. The Abejas played hard but played with little emotion, but we've always been a team that plays with our emotions on our sleeves, by this I mean that these girls know each other very well and they communicate in their own special way on the field. You can say that they do their talking on the field even though they don't talk, the way they play shows they communicate.
Andrea Estrada is our goal keeper, the team loves this girl's game at goalie position and they will go great lenghts to protect her. Andrea is one
tough cookie. Our substitutes are getting better at filling in, Nellie has this thing that she's not worthy but I strongly feel that Nellie holds this team together somehow. I know that Nellie will come around before season end. Nellie is the key at the defensive end and I lean on her, count on her on the defensive end because shes alot better than what she leads on to and its my job as a coach to bring the best out of her. Nellie has always been our defensive line and the Abejas will need her strong mentally/physically.

Abejas vs. Aztecas 0-13

I don't have a whole bunch to say about this game since the score says it all. We didn't show up to play and what we did play we showed no character. I should emphasize that the Abejas, being a girl's soccer club plays in a mostly boys league. Besides the Abejas the Brazil team is the only other girls's team. So the win/loss column doesn't always make it easy for us. We had no leadership in this game. At the end of this game I appointed Leslie Martinez, and Marlene Valverde as team captains. Hopefully this will change our game having appointed leaders to look to for guidance. I think Marlene is a good leader offensively and she has a lot of ability to motivate her players. This game got so ugly that at one point we were just watching the balls go by us. We had 8 shots on goal compared to their 26 and we must straighten this out if we have any hope of making a run for the playoffs. Shots on goal is a key issue for us. In order to score you must take shots and we didn't do this in this game. As a result they teed off on us but we'll be back and will face them again with different results. For the girls it's back to the gym to get ready for the next game.

Abejas vs. Cochorritos 2-11

I'm really disappointed in this game and that's to put it lightly, for I set a goal in this game to increase our shots on goal and it was not accomplished. This was our starting intention but we immediately fell away from this goal. Andrea at the goalie position played extremely well under duress. They put a lot of pressure on her and she held her own during the game. I can see why this team is so high on her. We took one shot on goal in the first half and that was it. The second half of the game we continued to do the opposite of what I had set out for them to do. We were constantly trying to outdribble and outspace them and we couldn't but I felt that we could outshoot them and we didn't because no shots were taken. The last five minutes of the game we took several shots at goal. I was pleased with this but it was to late in the game. We made 2 points off penalty kicks. Jaden Butcher scoring one and Marlene Valverde with the other. Jaden Butcher is coming on strong, and I feel that Jaden is going to be key to our attacks. She plays extremely hard and she plays with a chip on her shoulder. I have addressed this with the team and my thoughts are because of our situation in a mostly boys league we need to play with a chip on our shoulder to make a run in this division. Come playoff time the Abejas will be there.
Erica Ramos and Crystal Lopez need to step up for they also are key players. Having said that, the Abejas will be taking a close to 3 week layoff with no practices or games and I don't know how that will affect us come our next game. However, practice will be starting again and we will have a little bit of time to prepare for our next game.
